Firefox essential extensions

I’ve decided (as many have before me) to post a list of the Firefox extensions that are most useful to me, mainly so that I have them handy whenever I need to do another fresh Firefox setup on a fresh system, but also for others to get inspiration. I’ll keep this list up to date with my latest preferred extensions.

Web Developer

Gotta *love* the ‘Edit CSS’ and ‘Show style information’ features. Essential for web developers (or people just making their small personal websites like me).

Aardvark

Extremely useful if you quickly want to discover how that __supa-cool__ website you just discovered was built.

IE view

Discover how your website looks like in IE by opening any website in IE with a RMB click. Also useful to switch browsers for those nasty webpages that only work well in IE.

ColorZilla

Advanced Eyedropper, Color picker and Page zoomer. I usually use this to find out the colors on a site that I like.

del.icio.us post

Directly post a webpage to your del.icio.us bookmarks with right mouse button click.

Bloglines Toolkit

Adds a notifier to the Firefox status bar, which checks for recent changes to your RSS subscriptions on bloglines

LiveLines

Makes adding RSS feeds to bloglines easier.

Bookmarks Synchronizer

Allows me to synchronize my bookmarks over different systems, and have quick access to them whenever I am on a new system. This extension allows to synchronize bookmarks over FTP/HTTP with a remotely stored bookmarks list. I tend to use the Firefox bookmarks service less ever since I’ve started an avid user of del.icio.us and bloglines, but it still comes in handy now and then, especially for those ‘heavily’ used sites — those that I visit several times a day (and don’t have RSS feeds).

JustBlogIt

I use this to post about a site I come across to the Wordpress interface of this journal with a simple RMB click.

BugMeNot

Come across a site that requires registration to have a access to post/search/read but you only want information fast? BugMeNot uses a user-submitted database of website logins. Just RMB click in a login box, and let the extension grab and fill out the credentials for you.

Tabbrowser Preferences

Enhances control over some aspects of tabbed browsing into Firefoxes native Options/Preferences dialog, without going through the about:config interface.

LastTab

Allows tab navigation in a most recently used manner.

Tab Mix

Many more functions for improved tabbed browsing. I switched to this extension after being a user of Tabbrowser Extensions for many years. Tab Mix is more light-weight than Tabbrowser Extensions, and has most of the features that I was making use of anyway.

SessionSaver

Save your session if you have to run but don’t want to lose the 10+ tabs you had just opened in the background for later reading.

PDF download

When clicking a PDF, a popup asks if you want to save the PDF to your hard drive, or open in in a new tab.
